Injectable wrinkle relaxers remain wildly popular and with good reason. This is because botulinum injectables like Xeomin offer facial rejuvenation without surgery or downtime. They can easily be added to most people’s busy schedules and for a lower upfront cost than facial surgery. While it is true that Xeomin is available at many practices nationwide, the experienced team at Austin Plastic Surgeon has the skill, technique, and training to provide highly tailored results. Xeomin vs. Botox
In a sense, yes, Xeomin is a BOTOX Cosmetic alternative because both injectables are composed of botulinum toxin type A. This active ingredient has been used safely and effectively for decades to halt muscle contraction in a precisely targeted area. The muscle in that specific area will no longer fold the skin when you make facial expressions, thereby preventing how these wrinkles are formed.
Xeomin and BOTOX are similar in some ways, and different in other ways. Our experienced team can help you select an injectable. Many of our patients eventually favor one over the other for a variety of reasons, including cost and personal experience with the results.
If you are allergic to BOTOX, you may be allergic to Xeomin as well, since they are both composed of botulinum toxin type A. Xeomin may be a good alternative if you were mostly happy with your BOTOX results but wondering if a similar injectable can provide a better experience in Austin.
BOTOX and Xeomin are formulated differently. BOTOX has additive proteins surrounding the botulinum toxin molecules, while Xeomin is a pure form of botulinum toxin type A. While this formulation difference doesn’t necessarily mean one it could be a body procedure or any cosmetic procedure we offer that you are interested in BOTOX because of the presence of the proteins. It is possible that if you’ve noticed your normal botulinum toxin treatments seem ineffective, then Xeomin may work for you instead. More research is needed to make any definitive conclusions.
Benefits
Xeomin temporarily smooths facial lines caused by repeated facial expressions:
- Frown lines/glabellar lines (the vertical creases between the eyebrows)
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
It cannot address wrinkles caused by volume loss, which are typically treated with a dermal filler.
Pain
Most people in Austin experience minimal to non-existent discomfort during Xeomin injections. A very thin needle is used. You may feel a slight pinch as the needle is inserted, but discomfort will go away rapidly. We may suggest a topical anesthetic or cold pack to numb the area.
Results
Botulinum toxin type A is the reason Xeomin works. This safe formulation of the neurotoxin is FDA-approved for softening frown lines. Once injected, botulinum toxin type A halts the signal from the nerves to the muscle. Those signals tell the muscle to contract, which folds the skin. Xeomin stops the contraction, allowing the skin to remain smooth and wrinkle-free.
Treatment Duration
Austin Xeomin’s results last 3-4 months. The results will fade but can be restored with another injection appointment.
Recovery
Most people get back to their normal activities immediately. It is possible you will experience swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection site for a few hours to a couple of days following. Avoid strenuous exercise for a few days to prevent excessive bruising, which can usually be concealed with cosmetics. We’ll also advise you against rubbing or massaging the area for at least several hours so that the injectable can settle in the treatment area.
Safety
Xeomin is a prescription medication that has been FDA-approved for adults in Austin age 18 and older. There are several very rare serious side effects that we will fully inform you of as part of your consultation. Less serious side effects include headaches, tiredness, droopy eyelid, and neck pain. We will review all the potential side effects with you and make sure you are a good candidate for the injectable before recommending it.
