Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Semaglutide have been the hottest weight lose craze in my lifetime. Patients have been found to lose 15 -20% of their body weight over the period of a year. We have never had a medication available to our patients that is this effective with so few side effects.
The current concern for patients and physicians has been the supply of these medications. As Ozempic and Mounjaro was first FDA approved to treat diabetics patients and was found to have profound weight loss properties. As physicians we know that helping patients maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle can decrease the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. Thus, these medications have a role in treating patients that are not diabetic, but at risk for diabetes and heart disease in the future.
To help with the supply issues many compound pharmacies have been able to provide medical offices with a compound version of Ozempic, semaglutide. There are several reasons this is available to patients and a good option for weight loss and prevention of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic medical issues.
One, using the compound version of semaglutide allows for patients that are using Ozempic or Mounjaro for diabetes to be able to obtain their medication. The compound version of semaglutide is not taking away from the supply of Ozempic or Mounjaro. In fact, it is supplementing the supply for patients that cannot obtain Ozempic or Mounjaro.
Second, compound versions of semaglutide can be very effective. I have personally used a compound version of semaglutide with great success. It is important to make sure the semaglutide is coming from an accredited American compound pharmacy. Compound pharmacies have to maintain certain standards and create compound medications on a daily basis to help with a host of medical concerns.
At Austin Plastic Surgeon we obtain our compound semaglutide from the same compound pharmacies that we have used for years for other medications. When compound medications come from certified American compound pharmacies, they can be effective and do not deplete the supply of Ozempic or Mounjaro for diabetic patients. Call to learn more.
