About Areola Reduction

Areola reduction is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reduce the diameter of the areolas to create a more balanced, proportional appearance. There are many reasons why someone would be interested in an areola reduction procedure, including asymmetry, oversized circumference, puffiness, and more. While it is completely normal and natural to be born with uneven or lopsided areolas, some women may also see changes from factors such as aging and pregnancy. (1) This procedure can be performed as a standalone treatment or as part of another breast procedure.

There are many benefits to undergoing an areola reduction surgery, including:

  • Improved Appearance: The areolas can be resized and reshaped to create a more balanced aesthetic appearance.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Those who undergo an areola reduction often report an improvement in self-esteem and confidence.
  • Increased Symmetry: Patients can address any asymmetry seen in the areolas.

Candidates

Ideal candidates for an areola reduction procedure are those with wide or stretched areolas who wish to reduce their size. Patients interested in this procedure may be experiencing discomfort or feel self-conscious regarding the appearance of their areolas. Those with asymmetrical areolas may also be recommended for this treatment.

All candidates interested in areola reduction should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit until they are fully healed. Each patient’s candidacy will be determined by a member of our team at their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step to areola reduction is attending a personal consultation at one of our three conveniently located offices. The purpose of the consultation is not only to get to know each patient better but also to understand the best way that we can help them achieve their aesthetic goals. Our surgeon will meet with each patient to discuss each step of the procedure, as well as their concerns and ideal results. An examination will then be performed on the breasts and areola to determine their condition.

After obtaining the necessary information, the surgeon will craft each patient’s treatment plan, tailoring it to maximize its potential benefits. Preoperative and postoperative instructions will also be provided, alongside an all-inclusive quote.

Patients should be prepared to discuss and ask questions as each consultation is time dedicated specifically to them and their procedure. Our team is more than happy to help address any concerns, no matter how big or small.

Preparation

Each patient’s surgeon will provide them with a set of preparation instructions at their consultation. It is essential that patients follow these guidelines to facilitate a smooth recovery and an ideal outcome. Generally speaking, time away from work and other social commitments should be arranged to focus on healing. Additionally, individuals should arrange for transportation home following their procedure. The surgeon may ask patients to temporarily discontinue the use of certain medications or supplements, specifically those that contain blood-thinning properties. The use of nicotine should also be ceased along with the consumption of alcohol to minimize any potential complications.

Procedure

The procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure each patient feels completely relaxed and comfortable. The surgeon will then make a circular incision around the edge of the perimeter before removing a certain amount of the areola, reducing its overall size. After removing the appropriate amount of tissue, the surgeon will close the incisions. Throughout this procedure, the nipple will remain untouched, preserving both its sensation and the underlying structures. Areola reduction is performed on an outpatient basis and can often be completed in an hour. (2)

Recovery

Each patient will receive a set of post-operative instructions from their surgeon at their personal consultation. Following an areola reduction procedure, patients will need to be transported home by a trusted friend or family member. Many people also find it helpful to have assistance around the house following their procedure, but this may not be necessary.

It is common to experience some swelling and bruising in the breasts, but these effects will gradually subside on their own. Any discomfort can be alleviated through the use of pain medications under the guidance of our team. Patients can often return to work after about a week but should refrain from physical or intensive activities for several weeks, or until cleared by their surgeon. Patients may also be asked to return to our office for follow-up visits so that our team can monitor their recovery.

Results

The full results of each patient’s areola reduction can be enjoyed after any residual swelling subsides. Patients will be able to enjoy a reduction in the size and shape of the areolas, in addition to an enhancement in symmetry. Improving the aesthetic appearance of the areolas can also lead to an improvement in confidence and self-esteem. The results of an areola reduction are long-lasting, with most patients experiencing permanent results. However, a healthy lifestyle should be maintained to preserve the effects of the procedure.

Corresponding Procedures

Many corresponding procedures can be performed in conjunction with an areola reduction surgery. The most popular procedures include breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction.

  • Breast Augmentation: Breast augmentation is a procedure that alters the size and volume of the breasts through the use of artificial implants or fat grafting. Implants can either be made of silicone or saline with each offering unique benefits and stunning results. This procedure is one of the most popular in the country, allowing patients to create a more youthful appearance in the chest.
  • Breast Lift: Breast lift procedures are designed to physically reposition the placement of the breast to reduce sagging or deflation. Our surgeons can perform this procedure using a plethora of advanced techniques, offering individualized approaches to help restore the contours of one’s figure.
  • Breast Reduction: A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that can be used to reduce the size of the breasts, eliminating any discomfort or pain associated with enlarged breasts. This procedure is often paired with an areola reduction to create more proportionate results.
